Tell Us About the Extra Lip

Oh. You wanna know about the extra lip? I'll tell you about the extra lip. Its actually more important than the regular lip, if you ask me. Its cuz the extra lip has the structure to it. It has the depth, the crease in the flesh. That other lip, you don't even have to draw it, if that's all they have. I mean, if you wanna put down a little color to indicate it, fine. Fine, draw the regular lip, but don't come complainin to me when your likeness comes out weak. Look for the depth of flesh on the bottom lip. Look for the shape and the volume, the creases. Tell me about what you see with your marker.

So I was drawing Rupert Murdoch today. He has a great extra lip. He's somebody that has an extra lip in addition to a regular lip that has some volume and personality of its own. Very rare, not so rare in older people though. I'll put up a link to the video I did the sketches from right here(:

Graphing Smiles

I think it is safe to say that no two smiles are exactly alike, but it is also safe to say that after you've drawn many smiles, you can't help but notice certain structural similarities that carry through.

The very fact that these icons exist and are so readily identified with supports the idea of some amount of consistency between smiles. If, however, we aim to capture likeness, it is important that we don't draw that same simple smile shape on every face. Some people will have a smile shape just like the one seen above, but they are rare creatures. Here's two videos I made about mouths and how they can be constructed.

Observe Some Similarities

Freddie Mercury and Justin Biever have very similar mouth structures. They both share the bell curve mouth structure, full lips and it migtht also be noted they both have small noses with inward-pointing nostrils. Freddie's overbite is pretty extreme though. I doubt Justin's will get like this. The little girl in the bottom video from the BBC's presentation of The Lion the Witch in the Wardrobe has the same mouth structure as well. Her's is more extreme like Freddy's. I'd like very much to see what the girl looks like now.

Here is my representation of this type of mouth.
